Gran Canaria with Kids: An Adventure for the Whole Family (and Some Peace for the Parents!)

PresentYourSelf Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria – it sounds like sun, sand, and… well, what else? When you travel as a family, you are often looking for the perfect balance: action for the little ones and moments of relaxation for the grown-ups. That is exactly where this versatile island scores points! We have explored the island off the beaten path and present our Top 5 highlights that will make children's eyes light up and allow parents to take a relaxing breath.

Our first stop was Palmitos Park. If your children love animals (and which child doesn't?), this is an absolute must. Imagine a beautiful botanical garden nestled in a valley, filled with exotic birds, dolphins, birds of prey, and even an aquarium. The best part: the kids are kept busy for hours exploring the different enclosures, watching the fascinating flight shows, and admiring the dolphins. Meanwhile, you parents can sit on a bench in the shade of the palms, enjoy the scent of the flowers, and – yes, really! – take a few minutes to breathe. The shows are so well-timed that it never gets boring.

  • Getting there: Bus line 45 from Maspalomas (direct).

Top 1: Palmitos Park (Botanical Garden meets Animal Fun)

If you are looking for a bit more action, Aqualand Maspalomas is the next level. Yes, it is a water park. Yes, it can be loud. But it is also a place where children can truly let off steam. From fast slides for the older ones to shallow splash pools for the very little ones – there is something for everyone here. And where do the parents stay? While the kids storm the slides, the other parent can snag a lounge chair in the shade, perhaps even in the exclusive "Chill-Out" area, and simply do nothing at all. The kids are happy, occupied, and will definitely sleep well in the evening. A classic win-win!

Top 2: Aqualand Maspalomas(Adrenaline & Relaxation)

If you prefer something a bit more compact and perhaps a bit more "village-like," Lago Taurito is an absolute insider tip. This water park is located directly in the bay of Taurito and is built into the cliffs. The special feature: it is a saltwater water park. The water is drawn directly from the Atlantic and purified. The facility is more manageable than Aqualand, which is often more relaxing for families with smaller children. There are slides for different age groups, a large wave pool, and a great children's area. You have everything in sight, can relax on a lounger, and catch a glimpse of the Atlantic in between.

Top 3: Lago Taurito (The Compact Saltwater Alternative)

Anyone who thinks Gran Canaria only has beaches and water parks has not yet visited Cocodrilo Park. This park is more than just a zoo – it is an animal rescue center that specializes in reptiles but also offers a home to many other rescued animals. This is an excursion that deeply touches children. They learn not only about the fascinating crocodiles but also about the stories of the animals that were often rescued from poor conditions. For parents, this means: you see your children learning, marveling, and developing empathy. It is an emotional win-win. The setting is beautifully nestled in a valley, and while the kids are occupied, you can enjoy the view.

Top 4: Cocodrilo Park Agüimes (Rescue & Conservation Up Close)

If you are in Las Palmas, you cannot miss "Poema del Mar." It is located right next to Santa Catalina Park. Imagine entering a huge, modern building and immediately diving into the fascinating world of the ocean. The highlight is the monumental "Deep Sea" tank with one of the largest panoramic windows in the world, which gives you the feeling of standing in the middle of the sea. You will see sharks, manta rays, and countless colorful fish gliding past you. The aquarium is like a magical film playing before your eyes. Perfect for a relaxing day in the city, which you can perfectly combine with a walk on Las Canteras beach.

  • Getting there: Take the express bus (line 30 or 01) to Las Palmas, then a short walk to the harbor.
